People call us to clean up a hoarding situation all the time. I am always surprised at how much many people have stored and have a hard time letting go of. As humans we all want to save things from our past that we want to remember from our childhoods and families.

At what point do we cross that invisible line from remembering to hoarding? Are there danger signals that could alert ourselves and family members that this could be something we should be aware of?

As I began to research this very interesting issue I realized it can be very complex. According to Mayo Clinic “hoarding ranges from mild to severe. In some cases, hoarding may not have much impact on your life, while in other cases it seriously affects your functioning on a daily basis.”

That made me wonder if we all have a certain amount of hoarding tendencies in our own lives?

Mayo Clinic also said “Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them.

A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items.

Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs”

As we have cleaned up after certain hoarding situation and have come to realize the impact it has on the people that are living with this disorder but also their family and friends.

  • Persistent difficulty throwing out or parting with your things, regardless of actual value.
  • Feeling a need to save these items, and being upset by the thought of discarding them.

  • Having a tendency toward indecisiveness, perfectionism, avoidance, procrastination, and problems with planning and organizing.
